With over 20 lakh visitors expected in the city for the 50th death anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on Wednesday, the city administration is all geared up.
Various facilities like food stalls, medical camps and mobile toilets have been set up in the vicinity of Chaityabhoomi in Dadar’s Shivaji Park. Chaityabhoomi houses Ambedkar’s Samadhi and is considered a pilgrim place by his followers.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed 22 Close Circuit Televisions (CCTV), six watchtowers and eight large projection screens within Shivaji Park for live transmissions. “We are doing everything to ensure people are comfortable,” said Dadasaheb Shivjatak, Chief Public Relations Officer, BMC.
Four medical camps with 80 paramedical staff and ambulances have been stationed at various places.
Apart from 120 mobile toilets and 300 mobile bathrooms in and around the Shivaji Park area, there will be 100 separate bathrooms for women. Four BMC pandals will function as a resting area for the floating population. “I have personally conducted meetings to ensure best of the services,” said Mayor Dattaram Dalvi.
Accommodation arrangements have been made at the Parel and Worli BDD Chawls and Dr Ambedkar College in Wadala. For the first time ever, the Border Security Force (BSF) will be deployed to maintain law and order in the city. Rapid Action Force (RAF), Anti-Terrorist Squad special teams and CCTV mobile vans will also be deployed.
According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Arup Patnaik, 400-odd BSF men will be deployed at NC Keluskar Marg, Veer Savarkar junction and Sena Bhavan. Besides, three RAF companies will man the Chaityabhoomi and three SRP (State Reserve Police) companies will be deployed at the Veer Kotwal garden near Plaza theatre.

Nearly 500 traffic personnel will be deployed to man traffic for three days. The traffic police will impose restrictions from 8 am on December 5 to 9 pm on December 7.
Five special local trains will run between Kurla and Dadar and three specials between Mankhurd and Dadar beginning midnight on December 5. Additional buses will ply on route numbers 1, 25 limited, 27, 92 limited, 165, 241, 302, 354, 357 and 521, 241, 302, 357 and 521.
