Bollywood lifts Hollywood prostitute film?

Debutante director Sudipto Chattopadhyay, whose first film, Pankh features Bipasha Basu is making a film Sonagachi which is an Indian adaptation of the Hollywood flick, London to Brighton. Vajir Singh tells more.

His first film, Pankh, as a writer-director, featuring Bipasha Basu, Lillete Dubey and Maradona Rebello, is yet to be released, but debutante director, Sudipto Chattopadhyay, has already commenced work on his second film titled, Sonagachi. The film toplines Indrani Haldar and Rupa Ganguly.

It’s heard that the film is an Indian adaptation of the Hollywood flick, London to Brighton (2006), starring Lorraine Stanley and Georgia Groome.

The shooting of the said film commenced last year with Chattopadhyay shooting a scene at an actual Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, to bring in a sense of authenticity to the narrative.

Of course, the film has been Indianised, and now it revolves around the lives of prostitutes working in the maze of alleys, scattered around the city’s red light district.

Chattopadhyay’s maiden film, Pankh, delves into the psyche of a guy who was forced to assume a gender role as against his natural gender and analyses the disastrous consequences that follow, which destroys him in his adulthood.
