No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Sui, a town about 350 kilometres east of Quetta, the capital of volatile Balochistan province where Pakistan's main gas fields are located.

Sui police chief Munir Gondal declined to speculate who might have targeted the pipeline.

Similar attacks in the past have been blamed on Baloch tribesmen pressing the central government for increases in royalties for gas extracted in their areas.
