Even as prophets of doom are busy spinning theories on how India is losing its cost competitiveness vis-à-vis new global information technology and IT-enabled services locations, the country’s share in global sourcing is steadily moving north.
It has grown from 62 per cent to 65 per cent for information technology and from 39 to 46 per cent for IT-enabled services over the Fiscal 2001-05 period.
Says Nasscom President Kiran Karnik, “A SWOT analysis of the key global sourcing locations points out that armed with huge skilled labour force, quality, government support and cost competitiveness, India is well-placed to corner another sizeable chunk of the global sourcing demand that is estimated to grow ten-fold in the near future.”
Karnik was talking at the sidelines of the Nasscom 2006, inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh in Mumbai on Wednesday. According to the analysis, the biggest opportunity for India with the size of the industry, which will close FY2005-06 with exports worth Rs 100,000 crores, is to scale up the value chain and expand in countries other than the US.
