The incident occurred late on Thursday night, Superintendent of Police Kalyan Mallick said. The BSF man accused of rape was posted near Hili on the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The local people allegedly assaulted the BSF man and handed over him to the police, who returned him to BSF authorities.

His colleagues thereafter went berserk for over an hour at Lashkarpur village and injured the eight, including women and children, Mallick said.

Two BSF personnel who attacked the people were identified as Umesh Chandra Singh and RS Sharma, Mallick said.

A 12-hour bandh was observed in Hili region on Saturday to protest the incident. It affected normal life and led to the closure of the Hili immigration office.

All shops, educational institutions, offices, banks remained closed and vehicles kept off the roads during the bandh, which was called by the CPI-M and the West Bengal Adhikar Raksha Committee.
