Samajwadi Party candidate Madhubala Pasi won the Bhadohi assembly seat in UP getting 60,351 votes against her nearest rival and BSP’s Amar Singh Saroj, who secured 54,986 votes. BSP had won the seat in the previous elections.

BJP’s Deendayal Sonkar got 14,258 votes while Suresh Gautam of Congress could muster only 2,275 votes and had to forfeit his deposit. Even the candidate of a newly formed outfit Pargitisheel Manav Saamaj Party got nearly 2,000 votes more than Gautam.

In West Bengal, the ruling Left Front suffered a big blow when Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress wrested the Bisnupur seat from the CPI-M.

The result of the by-election, considered a litmus test for both CPI-M and Trinamool Congress, could perhaps smoothen the process for the Trinamool and the Congress to forge their long-discussed alliance for the Lok Sabha polls.
