Ten days into its landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party has been marred by several incidents of violence across the state attributed to its workers.
On Saturday, a youth was chased publicly and shot dead in Maudaha in Hamirpir, 70 km south of Kanpur.
The assailants nabbed, following a hot pursuit, are said to be SP workers. The getaway car, which the police confiscated, displayed the party flag. The victim, Salman Ahmed, 20, was associated with the BSP. Fateh Khan, BSP’s candidate from Hamirpur-Maudaha seat, said Ahmed and his family had campaigned for him during the polls.
Additional SP Hamirpur Shiv Kumar Upadhyaya, however, denied knowledge about the political affiliations of either party. “This fact didn’t come to us. We have recovered the guns used in the crime and the accused will be produced in court tomorrow.”
Ahmed’s mother Naseem Bano said her neighbours, Fareed and his three sons Ziyauddin alias Bachcha, Parvez and Jawed, were SP workers who had been pestering her family over petty issues.
In another incident, two SP workers, including a senior lawyer, were suspended by party officials in Lucknow for their alleged misbehaviour with the district employment officer (DEO) and his staff at the Ghaziabad employment office.

{{/usCountry}}On Friday, Nahar Singh Yadav and his relative Ramesh Yadav, both SP workers, went to the employment office, in the Ghaziabad District & Session Court complex, and allegedly manhandled clerk Narendra Kumar and DEO Arshad Ali.
