TWO HUNDRED and 52 budding CEOs formally completed their academic learning process at the Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow (IIM-L) and set sail on the turbulent waters of the corporate world on Saturday, after receiving their diplomas from Hero Group chairman Brij Mohan Lall Munjal.
This included 236 students in the PGP programme, 13 students in the first batch of the PGP programme in Agribusiness Management and three in the Fellow Programme of Management (FPM).
BM Munjal, a first-generation entrepreneur who reads “impossible as I’M POSSIBLE”, took risks, dared to dream to become the chairman of a group which now has companies like Hero Honda Motors, Hero Cycles, Munjal Showa Limited under its control. Delighted at learning that nine IIM-L students had signed out of the placements to create organisations instead of settling in one he said, “Entrepreneurship is the engine that would power India’s growth.”
Reminding the graduating students to constantly indulge in creative destruction, he said, “Remember you would have several people working under you. These people may be less qualified, but more skilled. Some of the things you may not have learnt in your MBA classrooms, you may add through your interaction with such people.”
Hari Shankar Singhania, chairman, Board of Governors of IIM-L urged the students to become change agents and not wait “for the optimum situation to emerge but begin with the dirty slate instead.” He asked the students not to be intimidated by the enormity of the task and contribute in building the brand India. He said that the country had come a long way since independence. “The average growth rate in the last 3 years has been 8 per cent and the target now is of 10 per cent. So a 9 per cent growth is not altogether unimaginable and I feel unemployment too can be eliminated in the next six years.” IIM director Professor Devi Singh drew the attention of the students towards Panch Vakaaras (five characteristics) for personality development—Vapu (developing a healthy body), Vesh (proper clothing), Vaibhava (proper presentation of your qualities), Vidya (knowledge) and Vinaya (humility). “Remember these panch vikaras to the core,” he said. He added, “There will be times when you face a dilemma. Do not allow yourselves to be lured by the temptation of a shortcut.
