But nobody?s listening to Delhi Police

A foot overbridge at Pragati Maidan was constructed in 21 days. Probably, a showcase event like the trade fair shook the Public Works Department out of its slumber. But a similar proposal to construct foot overbridges at seven of the city's most dangerous road stretches is gathering dust for the past one year, while pedestrians continue to get killed by speeding vehicles.

The Delhi Traffic Police had sent a proposal for constructing foot overbridges at Maharani Bagh, INA Market, Nanakpura, CR Park, ISBT, Chandgi Ram Akhara and Azadpur Sabzi Mandi. The proposal was sent to the Delhi Government last December.

Traffic police feels that there is a dire need for foot overbridges at these stretches. "These spots have become 'sudden vehicle stoppers', a traffic hazard for pedestrians. A safe road cross over is essential at these points," said Jt CP (Traffic) Qamar Ahmed.

Police officials have been getting e-mails from motorists wanting either a foot overbridge or a subway at these stretches. "These stretches are just before or after flyovers and a huge number of pedestrians cross the road, thus increasing the risk of accidents," said Ahmed.
