PEOPLE AS fat as Garfield— the lazy cat, or even Adnan Sami for that matter, are more prone to heart diseases and diabetes. And hence we should avoid colas and junk foods.
Garfield lethargic and hateful. Besides, Bugs Bunny and Popeye are smarter than Daffy Duck and Pluto because of the Vitamin A rich foods like carrots and spinach they consume.
This was the theme of the junior school quiz conducted by HOPE Initiative in Loreto Convent on Monday. The quiz, which was conducted by Saba Umar (nutritionist), was held for students of class 3 to 5. Once the answer sheets were collected, the answers were discussed in great detail, giving the kids tips on nutrition and healthy living. They were shown slides of children who had become overweight due to high junk food consumption. They were also told about the skin problems Vitamin B deficiency causes in people who do not consume Vitamin rich vegetables. The importance of folic acid for growing children was emphasized by using the example of Popeye the sailorman and his obsession for spinach and the smartness of Bugs Bunny was attributed to the fact that he consumed Vitamin A rich carrots, which are also essential for a good eyesight and good hair.

THE LUCKNOW Municipal Corporation has decided to check colas for quality following the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) allegation about presence of a “pesticide cocktail” in 11 soft drink brands. “We can ban a drink only after we have found it unfit for human consumption after lab tests. We will collect samples and send them for lab test soon,” says additional municipal commissioner Santosh Kumar.
Nagar Swasthya Adhikari BBS Rathore says, “No harm in conducting lab tests. But, the question is — does the state lab have enough facilities for testing residual pesticides in colas? Our lab takes two to three months for testing a simple sample of edible oils, dal or any other food product covered in PFA.” No official of the state lab was available for the comments when contacted by the correspondent.
