People from Jindrah area, who are protesting from the last two days, sat on a dharna and observed complete shutdown against the decision of the Omar-led government to deny tehsil status to their area.

Irked residents from all the hamlets of Jindrah niabat assembled on Dhar road in Krishanpur Manwal and blocked the Udhampur-Pathankot road for several hours, disrupting normal traffic despite inclement weather.

Several sarpanchs and panchs, besides local political leaders irrespective of party affiliation, alleged that Jindrah, having a niabat status for the last 37 years, was denied tehsil status while creating new administrative units by the government, "which is injustice with people of the area".

Meanwhile, extending support to the protesters, BJP state president and MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma said that the party will leave no stone unturned to make the "biased Congress-NC coalition" concede their demand.

He said that it was strange that the cabinet sub-committee, comprising the Congress and the National Conference (NC) overlooked the fact that Jindrah was one of the old niabats in Jammu province.

The people threatened that the agitation would be continued till Jindrah was accorded with tehsil status.
