Bharatiya Janata Party claimed to steal a march over the Mamata Banerjee administration after Calcutta high court granted them permission to hold public meeting near Victoria House where party president Amit Shah is scheduled to address a rally. The decision came barely 48 hours before the scheduled meeting on November 30.

The West Bengal government is planning to move the division bench against the order. However, the court has asked Kolkata Municipal Corporation the and the fire department to appoint one special officer each to ensure that the stage is made in accordance to specifications.

“The BJP welcomes the high court judgment directing Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Kolkata police to cooperate with BJP state unit in holding Amit Shahji’s rally at Victoria House. It is a historical judgment since it paves the way for equality to be maintained by local administrations for all political parties and not to be influenced by their political masters,” said Siddharth Nath Singh, national BJP secretary.

“The Calcutta high court intervened and made it clear that BJP can hold the rally at that spot, at that time and on that date...Now we have won in the court, tomorrow we will win in votes,” said Rahul Sinha, BJP state president.
