The Ahmedabad police are investigating possible links between phone calls made to Pakistan and Kuwait from Sabarmati central jail and the serial blasts in the city. The calls were made two weeks before the blasts, which killed more than 50 people on Saturday.

The police recovered the mobiles when they conducted a raid in the jail earlier in July. Investigations have revealed that calls were made from two Ahmedabad mobile numbers to three cellphones registered in Kuwait and Pakistan. Taking note of the serious lapse in security and its possible links with the blasts, special POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) court judge N.A. Acharya on Monday directed the police and the Directorate of Forensic Science to investigate the matter and submit a report.

“The police had filed an application to allow it to interrogate certain terror accused as it suspects them of having made phone calls to Pakistan and other countries before the blasts. The court has allowed the police to do so,” confirmed Special Public Prosecutor Vinod Gujjar to the Hindustan Times.

According to Gujjar, the five accused will be questioned in the jail premises.

Police also recovered a DVD from the jail where the five accused are lodged. “The DVD contains details about their links and other provocative material,” claimed a source.
