WITH AN appeal to local residents and traders for cooperation Mayor Uma Shashi Sharma on Tuesday inaugurated the campaign to turn the area in and around the historic Rajwada building into a garbage-free zone.
Lying cheek by jowl with the hub of the City’s mercantile activity, the Rajwada area churns out 50 metric tonne (MT) of municipal waste, or nearly one-eighth of the total refuse generated in the City - most of which remains strewn on the streets.
The campaign will focus on speeding up garbage collection and disposal in a designated ‘O’ zone that includes Gandhi Hall, MTH Compound, Fruit Market, Nandlalpura, Jawahar Marg and Gorakund, as well as Rajwada proper.
An additional staff of 45 beldars equipped with long-handled brooms, as well as 14 cycle rickshaws, 15 wheelbarrows and five handcarts have been deployed in the ‘O’ zone to ensure that garbage is swept off the streets as soon as possible. They will be in addition to the regular health department contingent stationed in the area.
The Corporation has directed shopkeepers to place bins outside storefronts for dumping garbage and warned of strict action against those who fail to comply with the order. Handcart pullers, especially chaat sellers around Rajwada who do roaring business at night, have also been warned against littering the streets on pain of a stiff fine.

{{/usCountry}}“Extra health department staffers have been posted in the area to ensure that Rajwada remains free of garbage. The beldars will patrol the area from 6 am to 6 pm to collect garbage, which will be transported to the dump at Gandhi Hall with the aid of cycle-rickshaws and from there will be taken to the trenching ground,’’ said IMC health department in charge Rajendra Rathore.
Special pesticide spraying operations will also be carried out to rid the area of mosquitoes as part of the campaign, he added. Earlier, IMC Speaker Shankar Lalwani, MiC member Rajendra Rathore and several dozen corporators kicked off the garbage free campaign at a ceremony in the vicinity of the heritage structure.
