Candidates? list sent for police verification

THE LIST of all 139 candidates, who filed their nomination papers for various posts of student?s union poll in Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University, has been sent for police verification. This includes 35 candidates belonging to other districts. Their details have been sent to respective districts for verification of their criminal records. According to Lyngdoh commission report, the candidates having criminal records against them or the candidates who are under trial or convicted in any case will not be eligible to contest the election.

According to Lyngdoh commission report, the candidates having criminal records against them or the candidates who are under trial or convicted in any case will not be eligible to contest the election. But sources claimed that around one-dozen student leaders with shady background had filed their nomination papers for various posts of the students’ union. The police officials have to submit the details regarding the criminal background of the candidates by Thursday evening, which is the last date of scrutinising of the nomination papers.

There are 15 candidates in the fray for the post of president. Twenty-one for vice-president’s post, 17 for general secretary and 25 candidates are in the race for secretary of library science. The students’ organisations of various political parties including National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharti Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have filed their candidates for the election. Serious differences surfaced in ABVP over selection of candidate for the president’s post. Kaushal Tripathi has filed his candidature for the post of president, which has increased the worries of the ABVP activists. Shrikant Mishra is the official candidate of ABVP for president’s post and former president Rajiv Pandey and Chetna Pandey have started campaigning in favour of Mishra. Pradeep Singh has a criminal background and presently, he is in district jail. Various cases against him are pending including under NSA.
