Candidates, parties feel EC's heat

While the town is abuzz with the discussions about candidates and their prospects in the election, the role of Election Commission has not escaped anybody's attention.

While the town is abuzz with the discussions about candidates and their prospects in the election, the role of Election Commission has not escaped anybody's attention. Most of the people seem to appreciate the extra effort that the EC is making to ensure free and fair election this time.

The sense of discipline, which EC is trying to invoke in political parties and independent candidates with effective monitoring, has however sent many unscrupulous elements reeling into discomfiture.

Unaccounted money worth Rs 13.3 lakhs has been seized along with 1,970 bottles of English liquor and a sizeable quantity of country liquor in Pauri district so far.

District returning officer, MC Upreti, said that 31 cases of violation of code of conduct had been reported so far. FIR has been lodged in 22 cases and notices have been issued to the rest. There are much less flags and festoon of party symbols that often infested the area in the yester years.

The walls that presented an ugly look with party slogans written all over are comparatively cleaner, although the party jingles continue to blare nonstop the whole day in the party offices.
