A drunk 21 year old student drove his Honda City into a BEST bus stop at Malabar Hill in the wee hours of Friday, killing his friend who was traveling with him in the car. The deceased, Nama Khoda Haje (21), who was from Arunachal Pradesh, was the son of a Punjab cadre senior IAS officer.
Haje, a student of Lala College at Haji Ali in South Mumbai, pursuing his Bachelor in Mass Media (BMM), was returning after a party when the car he was riding in with two other friends met with an accident, off the Governor Gate at Walkeshwar Road at around 2.30 am. The car, a white Honda City was being driven by his friend Chintan Mehra (21).
Mehra, who was drunk, lost control and bumped his car into four cars parked on the sideways before ramming into a BEST bus stop, said Police Sub Inspector VR Kanade of Malabar Hill police station. Although Mehra and his other friend, Paresh Patel, escaped unhurt, Haje sustained fatal injuries. He was declared dead after admission in the nearby Bhatia Hospital.
The police later arrested Mehra under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act for drinking and driving and for killing Haje. He was, however, later released on bail by local metropolitan court on Friday. The car belonged to Mehra who resides at Lower Parel.

{{/usCountry}}“We took Mehra for medical examination which confirmed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol,” Kanade told HT.
The police have informed Haje’s father, Khoda Haje who is an IAS officer with the Punjab Cadre. “His parents are on their way to Mumbai,” added Kanade.
Presently Haje’s body is kept at the morgue in the Bhatia Hospital.
Mehra is booked under sections 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering live or safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code. He is also booked under sections 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
