Most young Delhi women would rather have a career than lead a homebound life of leisure. It is not the prospect of earning money that alone determines their choice. It is a matter of personal growth.
An overwhelming 83 per cent of women said they preferred working to being a stay-at-home housewife, according to a Hindustan Times-C fore survey conducted among Delhi women in the age group of 16-25.
Not surprisingly 69 per cent of the respondents said they would like to choose their life partners themselves and not leave the decision to their parents.
As for their role models, late astronaut Kalpana Chawla figured at the top, Tennis postergirl Sania Mirza came second, followed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Although the respondents were divided on whether the workplace offered equal opportunities to both sexes, the majority believed the situation get better in coming years - 86 per cent held that in the next five years, the status of working women in the country would improve.
In what appeared to be a thumbs-up for women-oriented programmes and policies, 63 per cent of those interviewed said they felt there had been real gains for women's empowerment in India.
