A major Malaysian newspaper on Friday issued a front-page apology for publishing a cartoon that was criticised for mocking Muslim anger over the controversial Prophet Mohammed caricatures.

"We apologise. Unreservedly," the paper said in a statement covering the front page and spilling inside.

The paper described the cartoon, published Monday, as "wry humour".
It said it had not run any of the 12 drawings portraying the Prophet that were originally published by a Danish newspaper and which triggered widespread violent protests.
"In all humility, we accept the criticism levelled at the newspaper. We stand corrected. We should have been more sensitive - human error or not. So again, we apologise."
