A case was registered against an Army soldier for allegedly assaulting a group of tourists from Rajasthan in the south Kashmir resort of Pahalgam, a senior police officer said.
"We had received a complaint. An FIR has been registered and we have arrested one person. He is a private driver," Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, south Kashmir, Shafqat Watali said.
A case has been registered under various sections of RPC but the Army jawan, identified as Constable Jhankar Singh of 3 Rashtriya Rifles, has not been arrested yet, he said.
"We have approached the Army authorities. The jawan will be handed over to the police soon," Watali said.
The complaint was registered by Sunil Suhalke, a resident of Udaipur, Rajasthan.
The DIG said several people, including women, were injured in the alleged assault on the group from Rajasthan by the soldier, who was carrying a rifle at the time of the incident but was not on duty at the spot.
A vegetable vendor, Arshid Ahmad Bhat of Anantnag district, also suffered head injuries when he tried to save the tourists and was roughed up by the soldier.
