The Central Bureau of Investigation has lodged a case to probe allegations of custodial rape and torture of a woman by seven policemen in Tamil Nadu who had illegally confined her for three days in connection with a murder case.
The agency will soon summon the seven “identified” suspected policemen working with from Udumalaipettai police station in Tirupur for questioning as part of its probe, said a CBI source. The incident had allegedly occurred in August.
According to the victim’s family, the woman was picked up by the police as a suspect, a day after her landlady was found murdered. She was kept in illegal custody for three days and subjected to inhuman treatment, said the source.
During the three days, the seven policemen subjected her to sexual assault with a blunt object — that is punishable as rape under Section 275 and 276 IPC — said the source. The CBI took over the case on the order of the Madras high court passed on September 24. The court also awarded `2 lakh as interim compensation to the victim.
The court, while hearing the petition filed by the victim’s daughter who sought a CBI probe, censured senior police officers for their laxity in examining the complaint related to the alleged rape and torture and also directed the CBI to handle the case and file a final report in three months.
