The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the 2012 murder of Sheena Bora, may seek information on aspects related to the wider conspiracy surrounding the case from two West Bengal-cadre IPS officers who were in touch with key accused Indrani Mukerjea.

The officers allegedly knew Indrani as a “friend” at a time when she had moved to Bengal from her hometown Guwahati. “We are verifying information drawn from old acquaintances of Indrani, who spoke to the CBI, about her ties with a high-profile group of businessmen and government officials in Kolkata, including two state-cadre IPS officers,” a CBI source said.

Indrani allegedly came in contact with the IPS officers when she was still married to businessman and co-accused Sanjeev Khanna, according to the source. Indrani subsequently moved to Mumbai and married ex-media baron Peter Mukerjea in 2002.

“We would like to know if Indrani maintained contact with the two IPS officers even after shifting to Mumbai, (and) if they have any information that may throw more light on the wider conspiracy, including the financial motive,” said the source.

The agency has sought information from Interpol on possible bank accounts in Hong Kong and Singapore that Indrani opened in Sheena’s name. The CBI is verifying if said account/s held funds whose ownership could have led to a dispute resulting in the crime.

The agency is also likely to re-examine one of Indrani’s former employees who knew that Sheena and her brother, Mikhail Bora, were the former’s children and not siblings.

“Indrani had closely guarded the information that Sheena and Mikhail were her children from all, including Peter, but a former employee knew about it,” another source said.
