The fake encounter issue in Narendra Modi-led Gujarat erupted in the Lok Sabha on Thursday with Congress demanding a CBI probe alleging that there have been 21 such encounters in the state "at the instance of the chief minister".

Raising the issue during zero hour, Madhusudan Mistri said the findings of the Supreme Court ordered inquiry has revealed that a person belonging to a minority community was killed by police in broad daylight.

Mistri, who was supported by Left parties and the RJD, wanted a statement from the Union Home Minister and a CBI probe.

Alleging that 21 encounters have taken place "at the instance of the state home minister and the chief minister", he said only a CBI inquiry could be helpful as the state government would try to protect its people.

He said the arrest of three police officials in the fake encounter had shown the "collusion" of the state government.
