Accusing the Centre of adopting a soft stand on the Chinese incursions, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Thursday asked the UPA to adopt a tougher approach in matters related to national security.
"The people of India cannot and will not tolerate any infringement of the nation's sovereignty or security. It would be good if the Manmohan Singh government realises this basic fact and adopts a tougher approach in matters relating to national security," she said in a statement.
She alleged that the "aggressive" neighbouring countries view India as "softest, least assertive and most incompetent" when it comes to international relations.
The AIADMK chief also said that it was "pathetic" that the Centre denied the incursions even before Beijing denied incidents of incursions.
"What we want is a government with steel in its spine, not jelly. Otherwise, India would become a punching bag hit around by just about anyone who takes a fancy to do so," she said.
She also said that the government should have convened a meeting chaired by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan at least a fortnight ago when the incursions came to light.
