Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the centre was “keeping an eye” on the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh though he refused to elaborate more on the issue.
“All I can say at the moment is that we have all the information and are fully aware of the situation in UP. But at the moment I am not going to specifically talk about the situation in any individual state,” Singh said.
The home ministry has already expressed its dissatisfaction at UP’s handling of the law and order situation and rising crime against women. Singh added, “We will make efforts to ensure that law and order situation improves in UP and that criminals are put behind bars.”
Ever since UP governor BL Joshi met Singh in New Delhi a couple of days ago to apprise him of the UP scene following a spate of rape incidents, demands for home ministry’s intervention in UP have been growing.
UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan and state’s DGP AL Banerjee too sought an appointment with the home minister who also said that a comprehensive, integrated action plan to combat “all kinds of terror” — terrorism, separatism and Maoism, would be ready within 100 days.
