The city has witnessed a sudden increase in the cases of cervical cancer, the most common cancer affecting women in the country. Experts have attributed this growth to change in lifestyle and lack of awareness about the disease.
"The change in lifestyle has given birth to this problem. Besides, nearly 80% of my patients are not aware about any such problem," said Dr Bhawna Sirohi, head, medical oncology, Artemis Health Institute.
"I went to some schools and talked to students about cervix cancer and the available treatment for the disease. But it's not enough. We need a concrete plan to deal with the problem," she added.
Dr Preeti Jain, oncologist from Columbia Asia Hospital, said, "Most of the patients I come across have no idea about the vaccination against the disease. The government needs to do something to create awareness about cervix cancer, otherwise the situation will get worse."
Doctors feel that vaccination against the disease should be included in the standard vaccination chart.
