Chandy had been taken to the Medical College Hospital on Thursday night after developing a chest infection, but Friday asked permission from doctors to go to the assembly.

"He came to the assembly and at 9.30 am his doctors wanted him back in hospital because he is yet to recover fully," said a top source close to him.

Chandy was eager to hear the first budget of his government. It was presented by KM Mani, who created a record of sorts by presenting his ninth budget.

Chandy's official programmes for three days have been cancelled.
