He submitted his resignation to Governor AR Kidwai.

Chautala, who remained closeted with aides since morning at his official residence in Chandigarh, told reporters that the electorate had rejected his party.

"I accept the verdict. We will now go back to the people and analyse the reasons where we failed. We will overcome our shortcomings," he said.

The INLD got only nine seats in the 90-member Assembly. All ten ministers in the Chautala Government lost the elections.

Chautala himself had to face humiliation after his defeat in the Narwana assembly constituency at the hands of state Congress working President Randeep Singh Surjewala. However, he was elected to the Assembly from Rori.
