Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday equated Prime Minister Narendra Modi with infamous dictator Adolf Hitler, alleging that he sought to control Maharashtra using any means possible.

The Congress leader accused Modi of being desperate, which was why he did not allow any leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) state unit to gain prominence during the polls.

“Modi seeks to operate the state through a remote control and has sidelined all senior and emerging (BJP) leaders. He has turned the BJP into a party which can only be equated with the one (Nazis) formed by Adolf Hitler,” Chavan told Hindustan Times while campaigning in the Karad South constituency on Monday.

Chavan claimed that Modi was ill-equipped in matters of governance, international affairs and policy-making.

“Riding on the Lok Sabha success, Modi finished (the careers) of many leaders in the BJP rank. And now he’s reaching out to every galli (alleys) because people have stopped responding to his bluffing,” Chavan said.

He said Modi’s electioneering would not work in Maharashtra. “The people will give Congress a comfortable majority because they don’t want a dictatorship,” Chavan said.

“Some NCP leaders want ministries in the Centre and also want their party to share power with BJP,” alleged Chavan.
