The assailants partly sliced off her ear in the attack, which comes just four days after a brutal assault on a woman at an unguarded ATM kiosk in Bangalore.

The incident took place in a busy locality within the jurisdiction of Chennai Corporation around 4:30 pm.

The robbers entered the ration shop in the guise of customers, pulled down the shutters and attacked the woman, identified as Gomathi, with a sharp weapon. They also robbed her of gold ornaments. She fell unconscious during the loot.

The robbers left unnoticed. The incident came to light only after Gomathi regained consciousness and raised an alarm. She was rushed to a private hospital and was released later.

The police have started an investigation into the case. A senior police official downplayed the incident saying that it was nothing big. “We are carrying out investigations and will catch the criminals soon,” he said.

Her right side paralysed, she is undergoing treatment at a Bangalore hospital.
