"Amit Kushwaha fell into a bore well in Ghaneshwar village (of Katni district) in the evening and has got stuck at a depth of 22 feet," local legislator Dilip Dubey told IANS on telephone.

"The rescue operation is on to save the child, who is being watched through a CCTV camera and also being supplied oxygen. A team of doctors is also keeping a close watch on the child's condition," he added.

Rescuers were digging a parallel that could lead them to the child. Army personnel from nearby Jabalpur district were expected to join the efforts, Dubey said.

"All efforts are being made to save the child. Oxygen is also being pumped into the hole. Army experts are also expected to reach here soon," District Collector Anupam Rajan said on telephone.

"Senior officials are monitoring the operations," he added.

This is the fourth case of a child falling in a pit in the past two months and second in almost a month.

Four-year-old Prince of Haryana had attracted nationwide attention last year when he spent over 50 hours in a well he had fallen into before being rescued.
