Children camps a big hit this winter

As harsh winters force schools in the Valley to close for vacations, a new trend has gripped the students to keep themselves engaged and make good use of the three month period- that of winter camps.

"We usually start our winter camp in the first week of December. The purpose is to keep children in touch with their studies and make them do fun-filled activities during the break," said Shafaq Azim Matto, who runs the Bubbles daycare school in Barzulla area.

Winter camps are usually held for children between the age group of four to 14.

Sheeba Nehvi, principal of Cambridge Child Development Centre, said, "The winter camp accommodates between 27-30 students. Since most of the children come from different schools, we assign different teachers to help the children with their work."

These camps try to go beyond the conventional ways of learning. "We also impart religious teachings. We have debates and discussions and try to make the most of the holidays," Nehvi added.

Over the years, the winter camps have picked up in the Valley, with people sending their wards to various physical and mental exercises.

"We prefer these schools, rather than let our children be at home during the vacations because they provide a good learning environment," said Sheeba Drabu, a mother.

Most working parents have started admitting their children to winter camps to keep them busy while they are attending their office work.

"The children usually tend to get bored at home during the holidays. These winter camps create a new environment of learning for them," added Drabu.
