Shops are presenting kaleidoscopic view these days as the attractive decorative items from China have flooded the markets this Diwali. Gone are the days of decorating the houses with the 'desi' bulbs because 'videsi' jhalars have arrived in a more attractive package.

These Chinese lights are available in almost all shapes and sizes. Most of them have been shaped like flowers.
Besides, they are also very easy to handle because the small bulbs are easily detachable and could be replaced quickly in case they get damaged. The prices are affordable and their life is said to extend to only one year. But their low prices do not cause any burden on the customers and in better terminology, we could call them as 'use and throw' items.
Traditional items have not been ignored either. Vandanvars, and other show pieces are also in great demand. Usually, the shoppers are more attracted towards the pieces which look ethnic.
However, the soaring prices of the essential commodities have hampered the Diwali shopping to a considerable extent. The prices of articles such as wheat flour, gram flour, pulses and dry fruits have shown a rising trend. And with the final day approaching fast, the prices of vegetables too will increase, said one of the shoppers.
The shops selling sweets are readying themselves for the final day. "Most of the people prefer buying the sweets a day before the festival and this is the time to do real business. We make special arrangements on that day and we prefer to display our items separately. We also make special snacks for the occasion," said KC Agrawal, a sweetmeat shop owner.
