'Kuchh meetha ho jaye'.

OF COURSE, this one liner reminds of the 'meetha' which has replaced our very won 'mithai'. Wrapped in attractive packages and endorsed by the popular actors of the showbiz industry, the chocolates have become the hot favourites this Rakshabandhan.
Heart shaped, triangular, rectangular, the companies have come up with special packages of varied shapes to attract the customers and the dazzling presence of Preity Zinta or Rani Mukherjee for the commercials still add to their popularity.
They have, infact, become the best gift option and no wonder the 'little brothers' have started refusing the traditional sweets prepared for the festival of Rakshabandhan. The sisters too expect packs filled with mouth-watering flavours as a gift from their brothers. So, after applying the tika, just tear the wrapper and give your brother a mouthful of just any delectable chocolate piece.
"It is the fusion of Indian and Western culture which has also penetrated the festive celebrations. But it is too early to predict the long term effect of this trend as nothing could replace the rasgullas, sandesh, imarti or kalakand, just to name a few traditional sweets," said one of the sweet sellers.
Remember those good old days when the brothers used to gift the rupee notes of various denominations as a token of gift on Rakshabandhan. But those good old days have become still better this year. Mobile phones have become a rage among the youngsters as another gift option to present their sisters.
The cut-throat competition among the telecom companies has made things pretty better for the customers as the mobiles have become accessible to most of us.
"My sister will be surprised to receive the gift as she must have never thought that I will present her a mobile," said Ashutosh, a youngster working in a private bank.
Spice(y) Priyanka Chopra endorsing a brand has put forth just another side of the story. "Being the elder sister, I will be happy to gift my brother with a mobile," said Akansha.
There are also the various ringtones suitable for the occasion with the tunes of the old melodies such as 'bhaiyya mere rakhi ke bandhan...', 'resham ki dori..' and many more.
And there is no dearth of multiple other items being displayed in the gift shops.
"I would say that too much commercialization has started overshadowing this traditional festival," said RC Srivastava, an elderly citizen.
"These gifts are just the symbol of strengthening the brother-sister bond. The very essence of the festival lies in reiterating the pledge of acting as the pillar
of strength for one's sister," said Akash, a student.
