City men more prone to suicide?

WOMEN SEEM to handle pressure better than men, if the number of suicides in the State capital is anything to go by. The data show the number of suicides committed by men in Bhopal has gone up by three times in the last ten years. Last year, there were 257 suicides. Of these 159 men and 98 women committed suicide.

The data show the number of suicides committed by men in Bhopal has gone up by three times in the last ten years. Last year, there were 257 suicides. Of these 159 men and 98 women committed suicide.

In 2004, 148 men and 129 women committed suicides. The records of Bhopal police suggest that more number of women committed suicide ten years ago. In 1995, 48 men and 78 women committed suicide. The next year, 86 men and 127 women committed suicide.

But after 1998, the number of women steadily went down while that of men committing suicide went up and touched 176 in 2000.

The same year, the highest suicide rate amongst women was recorded in the City with the figure touching 133. The police officials agree that depression, inability to handle pressure and tensions lead to suicide. Officials say the data reflect stress and tensions in the society.
