To benefit and provide better health services to people living in slum areas here, the district health department is all set to open two primary health centres (PHCs) under the urban health mission.
Udhampur chief medical officer Dr Arun Sharma said, "As per directions of higher authorities, we are planning to have PHCs covering an urban population of 50,000. The focus is on slum dwellers, mostly the migrant population."
He added, "Initially two PHCs are going to be opened in the city, one for Jakhani slum area and identification process for other is going on. The primary health centre will have a doctor, nurses and a laboratory to meet the immediate needs of the urban slum population in the city."
With the opening of two PHCs here, the centres are expected to benefit the migrant population of labourers, street vendors, below poverty line families, who live in urban areas. He added that the PHCs would reduce burden on tertiary hospitals.
According to reports, there are 21 slum areas in Udhampur city in which more than 1,269 people are living below poverty line and the main object of government is to provide better health facilities to all such population under the national urban heath mission.
