Seven candidates with criminal background are in the fray in various wards under the Cantonment police station.
Nine candidates are fighting election in areas under Ramnagar Police station. Similarly, four candidates with criminal background are contesting election from different wards under Bhelupur police station.While three such candidates are fighting election under Shivpur police station, two candidates are contesting poll under Chetganj police station.

A jailed gangster and sharp shooter of Muna Bazrangi gang, Ramesh Yadav alias Babu Yadav filed his nomination paper as a Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate for the post of corporator from Baghhara (ward number 65) in Varanasi Nagar Nigam election.
Congress candidate from the same ward Mohammad Farooq has pledged his support to Babu Yadav.
The date of withdrawal of nomination papers has already expired. Congress candidate Farooq told media persons in presence of State Minister of Forest Virendra Singh and chairman of Go-Sewa Commission Dr KP Singh Yadav that he was joining the SP and would support Babu Yadav.
However, the Congress leaders alleged that Farooq succumbed to the pressure of SP leaders and withdrew his candidature from the civic election.
Babu Yadav, who was involved in at least 28 cases of heinous crime, was arrested with another criminal of Varanasi, Anurag Tripathi in New Delhi, one and half year ago.
