CJI takes exception to minister approaching Madras HC judge

Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan today took strong exception to the reported act of a Union Minister trying to influence a judge of the Madras High Court. Justice R Reghupathy, a Madras High Court judge had revealed on Monday in an open court that a Union Minister allegedly sought to influence him.

Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan on Tuesday took strong exception to the reported act of a union minister trying to influence a judge of the Madras High Court.

"Ministers should refrain from contacting judges in matters pending in courts," the CJI was quoted as saying by NDTV.

"It is interference in the judiciary," Balakrishnan said, adding, "it is not a good practice and wasn't good for the judiciary."

Justice R Reghupathy, a Madras High Court judge had revealed on Monday in an open court that a Union Minister allegedly sought to influence him.

The judge, however, did not name the minister.
