Delhi boasts of serving the cheapest club sandwiches in the world. The classic chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayo sandwich, a standard lunch available in hotels worldwide, was used as a universal measure of affordability in the Hotels.com Club Sandwich Index (CSI).
The research showed that club sandwiches in Delhi and Mexico City are the cheapest in the world, with its average price being $10 (R537.53). The costliest club sandwiches are served in Paris, at an average price of $33 (R1,774).
The research was calculated by taking the real prices paid by guests for a club sandwich within 1,000 five, four and three-star hotels located in popular travel destinations across 26 countries.
City restaurateurs are happy. “Here, the prices of raw material are much cheaper, and a club sandwich is the most popularly ordered sandwich. So, we don’t price it exorbitantly,” says Chef Manisha Bhasin of ITC Maurya, which serves club sandwiches at R795 each.
“It is a basic sandwich and due to the competition, we can’t raise the price,” says Navrose Arora, restaurant manager at Café, Hyatt Regency, where a club sandwich comes for R800.
Some, however, don’t find that cheap. “May be it’s the cheapest in comparison to the rest of the world, but not for our pockets,” say Nishi Khanna, 19, a student of DU.

{{/usCountry}}Others say many restaurants in India don’t serve the real thing. “Except for five-star coffee shops, most restaurants do not make a true club sandwich. It is not only about the ingredients, it is also about a certain way they are layered,” says chef MManav M Sharmaa of Ignis restaurant in Connaught Place.
