CHIEF MINISTER Mulayam Singh Yadav blamed the media for Aligarh violence saying that there was no riot. Certain newspapers exploited the misunderstanding which cropped up between the police and a particular community to present a different picture.
“Aligarh was never down with riots. A few journalists and some newspapers, in active connivance with some forces, made vigorous attempts to foment communal trouble in the town,” said the Chief Minister while talking to newsmen. Yadav was here to bless the newly-wed son of a senior party leader, in Civil Lines.
He said Aligarh returned to normal and became totally peaceful. All the problems, he said, the law enforcers had faced were due to irresponsible role played by the media.
Regarding the ensuing Rae Bareli by-elections, he said that the BJP, the BSP and other parties ganged up to ensure the defeat of the Samajwadi Party nominee.
“The idea is to help the Congress win the seat. This can be assessed with the kind of candidates these parties have fielded to tilt the scales in favour of the Congress,” he said.
However, he accepted the fact that the city was facing massive power crisis. He said that entire Northern India was reeling under severe power crisis as the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) units run much below their respective capacity. He said the State Government was ready to buy power at any rates, but it was not being made available.

{{/usCountry}}When asked about the possibility of assembly elections, initially the Chief Minister warded off the query. However, he indicated that the election for the civic bodies could be held in a couple of months.
Regarding the allegation of physical torture levelled against a party MLA Shiv Kumar Beria by a party leader, he said that the matter was being probed.
