Col Suresh Chander, 51, posted as commandant at the National Cadet Corps (NCC) office, Rewari, and his wife, Shashi, were waylaid by four masked men. The couple was accompanied by Col Chander’s nonagenarian mother when the incident happened. A sum of Rs 10,500 in cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 1.7 lakh were stolen.

Col Chander said four men in their twenties stopped their Maruti car in front of his Verna near the Meham bus stand. He claimed that they came out wielding sticks and iron rods and told him to open the door. Threatened with dire consequences, the colonel did their bidding. One of the men took the wheel, while two others sat in the back seat along with Col Chander and his mother. The fourth robber drove the Maruti, while the Verna driver started tailing it.

Col Chander, who earlier worked in the army’s intelligence wing, said the accused then told him to run on the road ahead of the Maruti. At Sisar village, they sped away in the Maruti around 10pm, leaving behind his wife and mother.

The Meham police registered a case against four unidentified persons under sections 392 (robbery) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
