Panic spread in Aabkaari locality in Muzaffarnagar late on Thursday evening when two groups from different communities came face to face after a minor accident involved two motorcycle - borne youths and a minor.
Later, some residents of the locality beat up both the motorcyclists. Following this, people from both the communities confronted each other and some of them resorted to firing in the air. All the top police officials are camping in the area and heavy police force has been deployed to maintain law and order.
According to sources, two youths of Nayabaans were going home on a motorcycle when they collided with a minor boy of another community in Aabkaari locality. The boy suffered minor injuries. An argument took place between the youths and some of the local residents. The youths were thrashed and allowed to go.
After some time, about 18 youths arrived in support of the duo and started firing in the air. Some youths of Aabkaari locality also resorted to firing and both the groups came face to face. Some people also entered the Thathere Wali Gali and created panic. No casualty was reported in the clash but the atmosphere became tense.
A heavy force, including top police officials reached the spot but some belligerent people continued firing from the roof tops of their houses, even in the presence of the police.
Sources said both groups fired more than 50 rounds. After this, police acted sternly to disperse the irate crowd and heavy force was deployed in Aabkaari, Nayabaans and Thathere Wali Gali.
CO city Sanjeev Bajpai said one person had been taken into custody, though sources said seven people had been arrested for firing and creating panic in the area.
Nayabaans and Aabkaari localities have a mixed population. Just two days ago, one such clash was also averted in Shahabuddinpur village due to the timely action of the police.
