Mir (57), two-time MLA, has lost the assembly elections by less than 200 votes from the Dooru constituency in last assembly polls.

Outgoing PCC president Saifuddin Soz wished him a great success and said it's his pleasure to welcome Mir as new president of the state. He said the Congress alone can maintain the unity and integrity of the state.

Addressing party workers, Mir said he will work to strengthen the party across the state. "The Congress alone has cadre in every corner of the state. Though the election results were not up to our expectations, we have strengthened our base in Kashmir and Ladakh regions.

The Congress represents the aspirations of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions and will work for it," he told HT.
