Congress party on Sunday called on the government to cap taxes on oil products to prevent a hike in domestic petroleum prices.

The party made its demand in a draft resolution on economic affairs at a three-day conference in the southern Indian city that aims to review the performance of the party and government and chart policy. The draft is due for adoption on Monday.

"Congress calls upon the government to put a cap against the unreasonable increase in sales tax, VAT (value added tax), cess to control escalations of petroleum products," the draft resolution said.
