Chhattisgarh's main opposition party Congress on Wednesday walked out of the state assembly after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government rejected its demand for a house panel probe into alleged irregularities in police appointments.
Congress legislators led by Leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma and his deputy Bhupesh Baghel staged a walkout as Home Minister Ramvichar Netam refuted charges of irregularities in the appointment of constables for two India Reserve Battalions (IRB).
"There is total transparency in IRB appointments. The recruitments are going on under the guidelines of the central government and there is no question of a probe by a house panel into the matter," Netam told the house.
Congress members alleged that Netam was favouring candidates of his home district, Surguja, in the appointments.
Congress has 34 members in the 90-member assembly while the BJP has 51 members.
