Congress wins Orissa Assembly by-election

The by-poll was necessitated by the death of Congress legislator and former minister Gajadhar Majhi.

Congress' Prafulla Majhi on Thursday won the by-election to the Orissa Assembly constituency of Talsara defeating the ruling Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition candidate by over 2,000 votes.

The election was held on Oct 29.

The by-poll was necessitated by the death of Congress legislator and former minister Gajadhar Majhi, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1971 on a Congress ticket. He had won from Talsara, in Sundergarh district, five times since 1980.
