The rising number of thefts and murders in the Millennium City belies the city police’s claim that they are doing their best to curb crimes.
According to the latest data, there has been a steady increase in the number of vehicle thefts, robberies and other such cases. Till last week (December 10), a total of 2,595 vehicles were stolen from the city against 2,331 last year.
Although marginal, theft cases have also gone up from 2,935 in 2010 to 3,103 this year. The data shows that dowry harassment cases have increased by 27.38% to 107 this year from 84 a year ago.
While the rioting incidents reached 103 as compared to last year's figure of 77, cases of abduction have increased by 17.07% — from 41 in 2010 to 48 this year.
Residents say that the figure can go higher as in many cases police do not register FIRs.
"Though the police express helplessness citing shortage of staff and patrolling vehicles, their negligence has emboldened criminals," said Hemant Kumar.
He said his son's mobile was snatched in front of a police post last month but the police refused to lodge an FIR.

A recent survey by Hindustan Times and C-fore revealed that rising criminal incidents is one of the main concerns of the city residents.
People who participated in the survey rated crime and corruption as important issues after basic amenities such as water, electricity, roads, and public transport.
As many as 68% people complained about poor law and order situation.
Only 3% residents said that the current situation is better than earlier and a mere 22% felt safe while travelling alone at night.
