Cops on buses, campuses to keep Romeos at bay

Women constables are travelling on feeder buses that ply on Delhi University’s North Campus to ensure that the ongoing admission season is free of eve teasing.

The police feel the presence of women constables in uniforms on the buses will act as a deterrent and ensure that incidents of eve teasing come down. The police move was prompted by complaints of eve teasing on Metro feeder buses. To get a better control of the situation, three policemen have also been deployed at each college.

“Our anti-eve teasing squad will respond to calls for help. We have female staff on buses so that girls coming for the first time to the campus feel secure,” Sindhu Pillai, the deputy commissioner of police (north), said.

The police, who have posted women personnel and deployed patrol vehicles on the campus, said they were constantly in touch with college authorities to improve security.

“Pickets have been set up on University Road, Chhatra Marg and GTB Road on the North Campus. Patrolling on foot and motorcycles is also on. Over 100 plainclothes women personnel have been deployed at various locations,” a senior police officer said.

Control rooms have been set up to enable aspirants to report cases of eve teasing. The police have stationed squads at all colleges and provided sealed complaint boxes. They are keeping a close watch on eateries.

After the admission season is over, the Delhi police will formulate separate guidelines to check ragging on the campus.
