Several Muslim organisations have expressed outrage at the "honour killing" of the 16-year-old Heshu by her own father Abdalla Yones. He was sentenced to a life imprisonment at the Old Bailey two days ago. But Scotland Yard is continuing its investigations because detectives suspect that the Kurdish community to which Yones belongs and his family have not told the full truth about the murder.
A Muslim leader said that the killing one's own daughter was not permitted in Islam and therefore, it could not be said that Heshu's murder was an honour killing. Her father had stabbed her 11 times and then slit her throat with a kitchen knife, leaving a heavily bleeding Yeshu to die. He was angry with her for having a sexual relationship with a Lebanese Christian boy.
Now, Queen Rania of Jordan has joined in the chorus against honour killings. She has condemned the killing of Heshu and said the killing of women perceived to have shamed their families was "a form of murder without trial, which is contrary to Islam". The 33-year-old queen said: "We should have no tolerance for the acceptance of honour killing."
The killing has caused major resentment in most women's groups as well. But, they have been threatened too. Teenage friends of Heshu did not tell anything fearing reprisals. Members of Kurdish women's groups were threatened outside the Old Bailey as they tried to distribute leaflets protesting honour killings.
