“The Delhi Police are torturing and putting pressure on Liyaqat to admit that he was visiting Delhi to plan a terror attack. They are forcing him to change his statement,” said Shah’s brother Inayat Shah, who along with other family members staged a protest outside the office of the deputy commissioner of Kupwara, 90 km north of Srinagar, on Tuesday.

Shah’s brother claimed he had recently visited Delhi to see him and had spoken to him for 20 minutes. “He (Shah) is being tortured on a daily basis,” he alleged.During the protest demonstration in Kupwara, the family demanded that the state government should intervene in the matter.Shah was arrested on March 20 by a special cell of Delhi Police from Uttar Pradesh after he had crossed the Indo-Nepal border.

Later, on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s intervention, the case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A Delhi court on Tuesday allowed the NIA to interrogate Shah inside Tihar jail till April 30.
